ALLAHABAD: A bonanza awaits ‘kumhar’ (potters’ community) as authorities have decided to promote ‘kullhad’ (earthen pot) and ‘dona-pattal’ (plates made of sal and banyan leaves) among lakhs of devotees and pilgrims who would visit Kumbh- 2019.“As part of ‘Clean Kumbh, Green Kumbh’ campaign, we will push for the sale of ‘kullhads’ and ‘green’ plates instead of plastic and thermocol items. We also expect encouragement from lakhs of seers saints associated with 13 akharas and more than 5,000 other social, spiritual and religious organisations that would camp on the Mela campus,” said an official.The Mela administration has decided to invite potters from trans-Ganga, trans-Yamuna and neighbouring districts to maintain an unhindered supply of ‘kullhads’ and cope with the demand. The potter will be offered adequate space on the Mela campus.Mela authorities' other steps for environment protection, including maximizing the use of jute and cotton bags, is also under consideration.District Magistrate ( Kumbh Mela ) Vijay Kiran Anand said: “We are drafting a blueprint to promote the use of ‘kullhad’ and ‘dona-pattal’ among visitors with the message of ‘Clean Kumbh, Green Kumbh’. We are also working on other natural ways to keep the mela campus clean.”DIG/SSP (Kumbh Mela) K P Singh said: “Beverages like tea, coffee, etc., would be served in ‘kullhads’. We aim to promote eco-friendly items among lakhs of devotees, kalpwasis, seers and pilgrims would be staying in akharas and other pandals of thousands of religious, social and spiritual organisations during the Kumbh.”“Eco-friendly items are easy to use and doesn’t pollute soil and environment,” he added.It is estimated that about five to eight lakh ‘kullahads’ and ‘dona-pattals’ would be used daily. The Mela administration will ensure that there is no shortage of such items.
