When will shelter homes get required infrastructure, HC asks govt

ALLAHABAD:The Allahabad high court on Wednesday directed the state government to provide a timeline for arranging basic infrastructure , including CCTVs, in shelter homes across the state.A division bench comprising Chief Justice Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale and Justice Yashwant Varma, which was hearing a PIL related to Deoria shelter home case, passed the directive after the women welfare department informed the court that it can not provide basic infrastructure, including CCTVs, in shelter homes of the state due to insufficient funds.Taking serious view of the issue, the court questioned: “How could the state government say that it cannot comply with the guidelines provided by law for protection of children in shelter homes because of lack of funds.”During proceedings, additional advocate general Manish Goel filed an affidavit informing the court that disciplinary action has been initiated against 35 police officers who had sent 121girls to Deoria shelter home in spite of the knowledge that its licence was cancelled by state government.However, the court observed: “Till now, no deterrent action has been taken against the cops involved in sending girls to the shelter home.”On August 8, the court had taken suo moto cognizance of reports published in newspapers in connection with the Deoria shelter home case and said it would monitor investigation into the alleged sex racket being run from the home.The case had came to light when on August 5, the police raided Deoria shelter home after a minor girl escaped from the home and informed the police about the horrible happenings going on there.
