Ministries to decide fate of stalled railway overbridge near airport

ALLAHABAD: The fate of the stalled Begum Bazaar-Bhagwatpur railway overbridge (ROB) being built near the runway at Bamrauli Airport now lies in the hands of the Union ministries of defence, civil aviation and railway, after the Indian Air Force (IAF) called it a threat to passengers safety and national security.The ROB, being constructed around 500 metre away from the Bamrauli Airport runaway, was being built as part of the projects ahead of the Kumbh Mela It was being constructed by the Uttar Pradesh Bridge Corporation Limited and was slated to be completed before October 31.The construction was stopped immediately after IAF raised its objections.Spokesperson of IAF (Allahabad region) and wing commander, Arvind Sinha, said, "We have conveyed our objections to the appropriate authority and the matter will be dealt by the ministries. The wide-bodied jet planes or fighter planes would not be able to use the airfield after completion of the bridge.Earlier, in an official communique IAF had said that the height of bridge was a dangerous obstruction for an aircraft landing or taking off and would also defeat the purpose of developing the the civil air terminal at Allahbad as it imposes severe operational restrictions.The IAF had also said that it had apprised the Uttar Pradesh Bridge Corporation Limited and the district administration about the problems with the construction of the ROB but no action vain.
