ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad high court on Tuesday dismissed a PIL challenging renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj. However, the court granted liberty to the petitioner to raise this demand before the state government in accordance with law.While dismissing the PIL filed by a high court lawyer, Sunita Sharma, acting Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Chandra Dhari Singh refused to grant any relief to the petitioner at this stage, as she directly approached the court by filing a PIL without approaching state government first, as per set principle. The petitioner had challenged renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj and requested the court to quash the government order by which name of the city was changed, and to issue writ of mandamus directing the state government to do away with the changing of the city's name.It was requested in the petition that the court should declare state government's notification of October 18, 2018 by which Allahabad district was renamed as Prayagraj, as unconstitutional.
