Delayed winter takes a bite off red guava production in Allahabad

ALLAHABAD: The delayed onset of winter season and the unscheduled rains during summer have hit the production of the famous ‘Allahabadi surkha’, popularly known as red guava across the country.Local traders are finding it difficult to fulfil the export orders for the fruit, which is widely demanded ever year not only across the country but in Middle eastern nations as well.Farmers in Prayagraj and Kaushambi, on Monday, said that as compared to previous year’s yield, the production of Allahabadi surkha has dipped by more than 50% in 2018.President of Allahabad Surkha Guava Welfare Association (ASGWA), Munnu Patel, said, “Farmers growing Allahabadi surkha in the region would not be able to export the fruit this year. Last year, the crop was hit due to a pest outbreak and this year the erratic weather has affected our profits.”Patel also said that a major of chunk of the farmers’ crop in Allahabad and Kaushambi had been damaged due to the unscheduled rains between April and July.“This year, farmers were able to reap only two baskets of guavas in one bigha of land, whereas last year they had been able to reap 10 baskets on the same land,” said Patel.Patel also said that each basket is being sold in the market for a price between Rs 1200 and 1300, a sharp decline from Rs 1,700 -1,900 last year.Each basket contains around 20kg to 22kg of guavas.Patel said, “Presently, over 2,000 farmers are growing red guava in Kaushambi and Allahabad but they have not been able to get a good price for their produce.”The farmers have urged the state government to provide some relief to farmers.The red guava or Allahabadi Surkha is the only product from Allahabad district which has a geographical indication (GI) tag.On an average, each farmer in the two districts used to earned profits in the range of Rs 50,000-Rs 75,000.Red guava is being cultivated in around 2,000 bigha of land in Bamrauli, Kaurihar-II areas of Allahabad and Muratganj area in Kaushambi.Even buyers have to bear the brunt of the dip in production as they have to shell out more money for buying the fruit.
