2 boat tragedies averted, 28 pilgrims saved from drowning at Kumbh

ALLAHABAD: Alert NDRF, PAC and Jal police personnel on Saturday saved over two dozen pilgrims from drowning in the Sangam in two separate boat mishaps.In the first incident, as many as 17 people were plucked in time when the boat carrying them partially capsized in the Sangam. This destabilised the boat and it started sinking and partially capsized,” said additional SP (Sangam) Purnendu Singh.“However, alert personnel of NDRF and Jal police managed to save the devotees from drowning and brought them to the Sangam bank safely. The incident, as per Mela police, took place around 10:05 am when a group of devotees was about to return after taking holy dip in midstrem the middle of the Sangam.“When a woman devotee slipped into the water from the boat after losing balance, the renaming 16 people also panicked. While four of the devotees took support of a nearby boat, personnel of NDRF and PAC saved others.”Similarly, PAC personnel saved another 11 devotees from drowning when the boat carrying them got struck in the middle of river Ganga and started capsizing.“Sensing trouble, PAC personnel immediately rushed to the spot in boats and managed to take out the devotees, including Sanjay Garg, Sunita Devi, Mukesh Singhal, Manju, Vinod Singhal, Shakuntali Devi, Mahavir, Geeta Devi, Sheela Devi, Uma Devi and Umesh Kumar, all residents of Delhi,” said Mela police adding that additional teams of Jal police have been deployed at the Sangam in voew of Mauni Amavasya snan on February 4. Apparently, the boatman had lost control over the boat after the commotion,” he added.The devotees — Sandeep Sharma , Mamta, Vidhyawati, RP Singh, Prakash, Ramsakhi, Jitendra Gaur, Ramesh, Deena, Neetu, Ramkali, Radhay Shyam, Umesh Kumar, Jageshwari Devi, Unnat, Gopal, Shiva and Jagdeo, residents of Kushinagar and Siddarthnagar districts, had hired the boat from Quila ghat to Sangam in the morning.Vidhyawati and Shiva had to be admitted to the Central hospital in Kumbh Mela area for treatment.An eyewitness, Kanshiya Lal, said: “ Instead of offering help to the devotees, the boatman escaped from the scene.
