Government hospitals' staff stir hits patient care in Allahabad

As the staff members were not intimated about the any renewal of their contracts till now, they were likely to lose their jobs.At TB Sapru Hospital, a large number of outsourced staff members blocked the main Stanley road. "As there was a shortage of staff, the government hired contractual employees and the contract would be ending by March-end. The agitated para medical staffers were seen protesting on the road wearing black arm bands. The agency's contract was to end in March and was to be renewed by the government.

ALLAHABAD: Patient care services at two government hospitals-TB Sapru (Beli) Hospital and District Women (Dufferin) Hospital-were hit after temporary staff members abstained from work to protest against the delay in renewal of their employment contracts on Saturday.Both the government depend heavily on staff like nurses, ward boys, technicians and doctors employed by a private agency. Of the two, TB Sapru Hospital alone has outsourced 70 staff members. The agency's contract was to end in March and was to be renewed by the government. As the staff members were not intimated about the any renewal of their contracts till now, they were likely to lose their jobs.At TB Sapru Hospital, a large number of outsourced staff members blocked the main Stanley road. The agitated para medical staffers were seen protesting on the road wearing black arm bands. "As there was a shortage of staff, the government hired contractual employees and the contract would be ending by March-end. The staff members were protesting as they were apprehensive about the that the contract of their agency would not be renewed," said Chief Medical Officer (Allahabad), Dr GS Bajpayee.Chief Medical Superintendent (TB Sapru hospital), Dr Niti Srivastava said, "Even though 70 of our staff members were abstaining from work, it did not hinder our hospital services."She said that the government has not yet taken any decision about discontinuing the temporary staff's services.The protesting doctors had blocked the main Stanley Road, which took a toll on traffic movement for over half an hour. The doctors ended their protest only after the police intervened. They later met Allahabad district magistrate Bhanu Chand Goswami.
