Devotees from Southern states show the way at Sangam

The southern state pilgrims apart from performing rituals, appealed other devotees not to throw puja materials including coconuts into the river with the message that each and every devotee can contribute to keep our rivers clean. "The fact is that a major chunk of devotees hailing from rural background used to throw puja materials when they arrive either to take holy bath or perform rituals. These devotees usually have altercation with volunteers of Namami Gange when asked not to do so.But when scores of pilgrims and devotees from different states arrive at Sangam to take holy dip, they follow the rituals with the message of taking environment protection issues in mind.

ALLAHABAD: The banks of the Sangam are strewn with filth, flowers, pieces of earthen pots, leaf plates, polythene bags, excreta, rotten articles, and other objects abandoned by the local visitors.But city residents and devotees can take some lessons from the devotees and pilgrims coming at the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati from the Southern states on how to keep the holy river clean.A group of pilgrims from Karnataka, who arrived on the banks of Ganga to take holy dip and performed all rituals, spread the message of cleanliness. The southern state pilgrims apart from performing rituals, appealed other devotees not to throw puja materials including coconuts into the river with the message that each and every devotee can contribute to keep our rivers clean. S Ganesh , a native of Hoogly said, "A group of 15 pilgrims from different cities of Karnataka are traveling to different holy cities of UP including Varanasi and Prayag and they performed all rituals with the message that devotees should first understand their responsibilities to keep our rivers clean". He further added, "we have requested other devotees not to throw puja materials into the river as it pollutes them."He was of the view that there should be some active volunteers everyday on banks who should be asking devotees not to throw puja materials, coconuts, milk etc into river Ganga.SK Reddy, another devotee claimed, "there should be strict rules and regulations on river banks and those polluting rivers should be dealt strictly."The fact is that a major chunk of devotees hailing from rural background used to throw puja materials when they arrive either to take holy bath or perform rituals. Local priests too claimed that local administration or AMC authorities do care about the banks of river during mega events. They also claimed that we have to clean the place ourselves.From the Bade Hanuman temple at the Sangam till the Nagavasuki Temple in Daraganj, there is filth, waste and excreta everywhere. Municipal commissioner, Shesh Mani Pandey told TOI, "AMC authorities have deployed volunteers on the banks of Sangam under the Namani Gange project who are taking up awareness campaign among devotees to keep our holy rivers clean and not to throw puja materials. He, however, admitted that devotees coming from southern states are very much aware about the river pollution and take proper care while performing rituals. He, however, claimed that cleaning of the river exercise is continue and AMC officials are seeking cooperation from visitors to keep the area clean and green.
