Meet Captain Reetika Dwivedi, born and brought up in Allahabad is one of the few commercial pilots from the city. She completed her 10+2 from Allahabad’s St. Mary’s Convent and her graduation from Sophia College for Women Mumbai.

Reetika Dwivedi

In an exclusive conversation with NYOOOZ Allahabad, Captain Reetika answered some of the most frequently asked questions about the not-so-popular-career. The captain told us that it’s the lack of information in small cities because of which the profession has never gained popularity like the other mainstream careers.

“All you need is physics and mathematics as your subjects in 10+2 and then you have to join a flying school”, she said.

Although she completed her flying lessons from abroad, she said that there are many good flying schools in India as well. Naming one of them in Uttar Pradesh itself, Captain Reetika Dwivedi said, “Becoming a commercial pilot is an expensive career, however even a simple MBA is costly these days”.

Defining ‘flying’ in one word, the Captain said that it’s a dream come true for her, as when she was little every time an airplane would fly above her head would turn up and her eyes would gaze the plane till it disappeared.

“It was class-6 or 7 that I decided to become a pilot, which thrilled my dad”, she told NYOOOZ Allahabad.

In conversation with NYOOOZ Allahabad

When she reached class-9 she came to know that science is a compulsory subject for becoming a commercial pilot, she was disheartened, as she never planned on taking science in 10+2. She almost gave up her dream and opted for Commerce with Mathematics in class-12. However, when she went to Mumbai for her higher studies, she found out that she could just give a paper in Physics from the NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) and could still qualify for admission into a flying school.

And since then there has been no looking back!

Although it’s one of the most challenging jobs in the world, Reetika Dwivedi said that she wouldn’t trade the profession for anything in the world.

For the unversed, the Captain said that one doesn’t need to be a graduate or a post-graduate to become a pilot, all that you need is Physics and Mathematics in 10+2, after which an aspirant has to join a flying school.

Going on a personal note, we asked Captain Reetika Dwivedi about her favorite hangout destination in Allahabad, to which she replied:
“Everyone’s favorite in the city, ‘El Chico’”.

Though, she now has to take special care of her health, she had always loved ‘Bairana ki chaat’ when she used to eat street food.(which she had to stop doing completely)

Among her three siblings, Captain Reetika is the third child of her parents. Every other sibling of hers chose variedly different professions in their lives.

“My parents have always been super supportive for everything we kids ever asked for, we have never been said a NO”, she claimed. The captain now lives in Bengaluru and flies 5-days a week. She visits Allahabad once a year and loves lazing around at home when she does.

“One doesn’t have to get up from the bed for anything at home, its just so amazing to be at home”, she rejoiced.

Her mother is a senior teacher at Girl’s High School & College and her father is a Doctor by profession.

Well! NYOOOZ Allahabad recognises Captain Reetika Dwivedi as a ‘City Hero’ and wishes her all the best for all the future endeavors!
