Kanwariyas go berserk, torch a four wheeler in Allahabad

ALLAHABAD: The rumour of the death of a kanwariya in road mishap has triggered violence in Baraut and adjoining areas on Allahabad- Varanasi highway under Handia police station her on Thursday morning.Various groups of kanwariyas went berserk, pelted shops and vehicles with stones, damaged the window panes of more than two dozen vehicles, vandalised Baraut police outpost booth before setting a four wheeler on fire. Three policemen were also injured in stone pelting. Ironically, the kanwariyas continued to create ruckus for more than hour in presence of a handful of policemen. SSP , Allahabad, Anand Kulkarni told TOI " The situation was under control and kanwar yatra was resumed within an hour of the incident".He also maintained that heavy bandobast of police forces have been made to ensure safety and security of kanwariyas heading towards Varanasi.SSP, meanwhile, claimed "The rumour of the death of a kanwariya has triggered tension in Baraut and adjoining area for around an hour."SSP said that a 23-year-old kanwariya identified as Mukesh, a resident of Mirzapur was injured when he was hit by a truck near Baraut area while crossing the road. The injured kanwariya was later admitted in a city hospital for treatment.SSP, however, said that Mukesh was crossing the road from wrong side when the truck hit him.An eyewitness told police "the kanwariyas were pelting shops, vehicles and police parties with stones and were not ready to listen anyone. They also attacked vehicles with wooden sticks and left passengers and drivers stunned."The kanwariyas became more agitated after they heard the rumour that police had intentionally hidden the body of killed kanwariya and started ransacking vehicles and attacked the Baraut police outpost booth and torched a vehicle parked near it.Upon receiving information, senior police and administrative officials including DM and SSP along with additional police forces rushed the spot and managed the pacify the agitating kanwariyas.Senior police officials have in fact taken the help of gram pradhans and locals to pacify the kanwariyas. The kawar yatra was resumed and vehicular movement was also restored.
