2 student leaders of Allahabad University make self-immolation bid

ALLAHABAD: Two student leaders of Allahabad University including the vice president and the representative of the Arts faculty of AU student union, made an abortive bid of self-immolation while protesting at the arts campus of AU, on Thursday. The two student leaders have been detained by the police.Large number of student leaders and former inmates of various hostels, who would soon be allocated rooms in different hostels, assembled at the union hall of AU, on Thursday. We are also demanding that the varsity administration should also roll back their decision of blacklisting Six student leaders of the campus, he added. They forcefully closed all the counters and working of the varsity administration, which continued suspended for the rest of the day.After prolonged dialogue with the varsity authorities, the student leaders have agreed to talk with the varsity administration. They had assembled to pressurise the varsity administration, demanding that the varsity authorities should roll back the decision of allocating hostels on the basis of courses as it is damaging the age-old tradition of hostel culture.

They had assembled to pressurise the varsity administration, demanding that the varsity authorities should roll back the decision of allocating hostels on the basis of courses as it is damaging the age-old tradition of hostel culture. They were also demanding that the varsity should withdraw the hike in hostel fee that would be implemented from this year.While the student leaders were protesting, heavy police was also deployed by the district administration to meet any eventuality. As the agitated student leaders started to enter the main campus, the police obstructed their way and heated argument and high voltage drama followed for the next around half an hour.While the heated exchange of arguments were continuing between the police, student leaders and varsity authorities, two office bearers of AUSU, the vice president Adil Hamza and the arts faculty representative, Chandershekar Chaudhary , sprinkled kerosene and were trying to immolate themselves before police caught them.As the police took them inside the jeep and was trying to take them outside the campus, large number of student leaders and inmates obstructed the way by laying down on the road, in front of the police vehicle.The police had to resort to mild lathi charge to disperse the student leaders after which they took the two office bearer to police line, where they are detained till the reports were last filed in.As soon as the two office bearers were taken out by the police, the agitators became aggressive and marched towards the VC's office. They forcefully closed all the counters and working of the varsity administration, which continued suspended for the rest of the day.After prolonged dialogue with the varsity authorities, the student leaders have agreed to talk with the varsity administration. "We would be holding talks with the VC on August 1 at 4:00pm but we are adamant that the varsity should accept our demand of rolling back the hike in hostel fee and allocating hostels as per the earlier practice", said Vivekanand Pathak , a student leader. We are also demanding that the varsity administration should also roll back their decision of blacklisting Six student leaders of the campus, he added."Following the agitation, we have agreed that a delegation of Five valid students would be holding talks with the VC in presence of SP city, ADM city and the varsity officials", said the varsity chief proctor, Ram Sevak Dubey.
