Police to use drones to keep watch on students during AUSU 2017 polls

Police have chalked out a special strategy to ensure free and fair Allahabad University Student Union (AUSU) 2017 polls, the City cops for the first time would be deploying drones during the student union polls to keep an eye on activities of students, leaders and their supporters. "In 2016 AUSU polls, the police had deployed five and two companies of PAC and RAF respectively and the strength of such companies would be more this year", said the SSP. ALLAHABAD: Known for its students' frequent run-ins with law enforcement officials, Allahabad University campus would soon have a set of drone encircling its premises. Additional police pickets would also be held reserve, said the official.SSP, meanwhile, said " Three police teams have already started to identify student leaders with criminal background and their activities would also put under scanner. This year, the strength of policemen would be similar or more as required.

ALLAHABAD: Known for its students' frequent run-ins with law enforcement officials, Allahabad University campus would soon have a set of drone encircling its premises. Police have chalked out a special strategy to ensure free and fair Allahabad University Student Union (AUSU) 2017 polls, the City cops for the first time would be deploying drones during the student union polls to keep an eye on activities of students, leaders and their supporters. The date for polling was yet to be announced.Once the notification of AUSU poll is issued by the varsity authorities, the police with the help of AU administration would also be turning in and around campus area into a "safer zone".More importantly, senior police authorities have planned to deploy adequate police forces from city and neighbouring districts and a cop would be keeping an eye on at least three student voters during AUSU and its constituent colleges student union polls.SSP, Allahabad, Anand Kulkarni told TOI "apart from drone facility, the police officials in coordination of AU authorities would be setting up checking and frisking points at different spots to check free roaming of unwanted elements and the students having valid ID cards would be allowed to enter the campus on the polling day.He, however, made it clear that police authorities would be more focusing on the strict implementation of code of conduct once the AU authorities announce the notification for polls. Police officials would also be holding regular meetings with AU authorities to strengthen the poll arrangements.Apart from civil police, adequate companies of personnel of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) would also be deployed in inner and outer security circle to prevent any untoward incident."In 2016 AUSU polls, the police had deployed five and two companies of PAC and RAF respectively and the strength of such companies would be more this year", said the SSP. Besides, half a dozen mobile patrolling parties will check students' movements around the varsity campus and additional forces would be placed at check, frisking and barricading points to prevent entry of unwanted elements in the campus.During last AUSU polls, around 1,000 cops, including 16 station officers, 25 sub-inspectors, two additional SPs, four deputy SPs, four magistrates and 200 constables were deployed to ensure a peaceful election. This year, the strength of policemen would be similar or more as required. Additional police pickets would also be held reserve, said the official.SSP, meanwhile, said " Three police teams have already started to identify student leaders with criminal background and their activities would also put under scanner. Sleuths of LIU are compiling the data of student leaders with criminal sketch from three main police stations including Colonelganj, Civil Lines, and Georgetown.The police have also urged the traders and owners of coaching centres to lodge complaints if any student leader makes extortion bid or demand donations and their identities would remain secret.The exercise of patrolling has already been intensified on streets leading to hostels and lodges, where students are living. The police officials are also interacting with the university authorities to prepare a list of student leaders who are known to have created unruly scenes on campus as well as streets in the vicinity with their supporters.
