Animal activism dates back to the 1800s when the first animal protection group in the United States, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), was founded by Henry Bergh in April 1866, however neighborhood activism has always been a part of our society for those sensitive towards the pain of animals.

One such voice of the voiceless in Allahabad is Dr. Samar Rahman. A general surgeon by profession, this 36-year-old doctor feeds atleast a 100 dogs every day. An avid animal lover, Samar also runs a society called the Animal Farm, which was founded in 2016.

Calling his sister Tammana Rahman, a source of inspiration, Samar told NYOOOZ Allahabad that he has been rescuing and saving animals, along with his sister, from 2010.

Citing the absence of vet surgeons in Allahabad as one of the biggest challenge in animal activism in the city, Dr. Rahman said that even if someone picks an ailing animal from the street, there are no surgeons in Allahabad who can actually help.

Animal Farm, as an organization of  six core member and a number of volunteers has rescued and saved atleast 40 puppies, 60 dogs,25 bovines various pigions, monkeys and cats. In the past 1 year they have rabies vaccinated atleast 250 stray dogs in Allahabad.

Drawing the three biggest challenges in his work, Dr. Rahman sorted them as:

1) Need of compassionate volunteers, who can go out for animal rescues

2) Unavailability of trained doctors in Allahabad

3) Fund Raising

Though Samar never leaves any animal that he sees in pain, he also said that an initiative by the government is needed to support the indigenous breed in India. Every year atleast 12 million pedigree dogs are abandoned on roads, which eventually are either run over by cars or die due to hunger and diseases.

Despite the fact that us homo sapiens have run over the tipping point, Dr. Rahman says there is still some hope left. Animal farms has made 12 adoptions in 7 months and that too Indies.

Recalling one of the most challenging rescues that Animal Farm has made, Samar told NYOOOZ Allahabad, “It was of the monkey chained outside Sai Mandir. A lot of permissions were taken, the authorities  were not supportive but somehow we rescued the monkey.”

Animal farm has a 24*7 helpline number 8948511983, on which you can call anytime if you spot any animal in need of help on Allahabad roads.
