Health employees collect 43 food samples

Tribune News ServiceAmritsar, May 14Taking a cue from the reports of the samples collected by ‘food lab on wheels, health officials have collected 43 samples from Dhab Vasti Ram, the biggest market of pulses, spices and condiments in the city. He said the samples were brought to the ‘food lab on wheels’ by residents, not by shopkeepers. According to him, the ‘food lab on wheels’ drive has been of immense help in identifying shops and food sellers whose products are failing on quality parameters. “We have collected samples from those shops, which have been reported by the residents who got their samples tested from lab on wheels,” said District Health Officer, Dr Lakhbir Singh Baghowalia.

Amritsar, May 14 Taking a cue from the reports of the samples collected by ‘food lab on wheels, health officials have collected 43 samples from Dhab Vasti Ram, the biggest market of pulses, spices and condiments in the city. Several samples of turmeric and chilli powder, brought by residents, have failed lab tests conducted by the ‘food lab on wheels’ but as the department could not those reports to take action against shopkeepers. So it collected samples directly from the shops suspected to have been selling adulterated food items. Most of the spurious items were found containing carcinogenic substances. “We have collected samples from those shops, which have been reported by the residents who got their samples tested from lab on wheels,” said District Health Officer, Dr Lakhbir Singh Baghowalia. He said the samples were brought to the ‘food lab on wheels’ by residents, not by shopkeepers. “For establishing the responsibility of the shopkeepers, we have to collect samples from the shop by following the due procedure,” said Dr Baghowalia. According to him, the ‘food lab on wheels’ drive has been of immense help in identifying shops and food sellers whose products are failing on quality parameters. Meanwhile, the ‘lab on wheels’ visited the Lawrence road areas on Monday. The team also got necessary items from the traders’ association.
