Action against illegal colonies, buildings ‘suspended’ temporarily

JALANDHAR: Demolition of illegal colonies and sealing or demolition of commercial buildings, constructed in flagrant violation of building bye-laws, has been suspended for a couple of days.A meeting was held on Monday at PAP in which Jalandhar MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh, four MLAs – Pargat Singh, Sushil Rinku, Rajinder Beri and Bawa Henry were present. Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Parveen Sinha, DC Varinder Sharma and MC Commissioner Basant Garg were also present in the meeting. The official machinery was told to stop further action till a meeting with Local Bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu “The demolition work has already been suspended and we shall take up the issue with minister. We are seeking a meeting very soon. There is a lot of confusion about the new policy,” said Chaudhary Santokh Singh.Jalandhar West MLA Sushil Rinku claimed that MP, three MLAs, except Pargat Singh, and Jalandhar Mayor did not want any demolition.Pargat Singh said that he was for action against illegalities and no further creation of mess should be allowed. He even accompanied Sidhu on Friday during the surprise checking and revealed that earlier also he has asked MC Commissioner and building branch officials to act against flagrant violations but they remained silent.Jalandhar Central MLA Rajinder Beri said the buildings which had already been constructed should be regularized with fine. “Sidhu should have discussed us beforehand,” he said.However Jalandhar North MLA Bawa Henry appeared to be taking a middle path saying that it should be amicably solved. “Public should not be harassed but we can’t go out of rules and regulations. We shall request the minster for an amicable solution,” he said.Mayor Jagdish Raj Raja said that MP and MLAs did not want demolition and wanted that these should be compounded. “There should be no national wastage,” he said.All of them said that they expected to meet Sidhu very soon.
