Farmer’s suicide: Accused at large, protest at Rampura Phul

BATHINDA: Hundreds of farmers protested outside Rampura Phul city police station to demand the arrest of a man accused of abetting the suicide of a farmer in Lehra Dhurkot village near here on June 3.The farmers sat at the two gates of the police station and did not allow anyone to enter or exit the station. “Two people have already been arrested and raids are being conducted to arrest him. We are on the job,” he said. “My husband could not tolerate it and committed suicide,” she said.The Bathinda president of BKU Ekta Ugrahan, Shingara Singh Mann, said Sharma was considered close to Congress leaders, so police were not arresting him and giving him enough time to get anticipatory bail.When contacted, Bathinda SSP Naveen Singla said there was no laxity.

In the suicide note he left behind, Gursewak alleged that three men — Darshan Singh of Mandi Kalan, Harish Kumar of Rampura, and Bhagta Bhai resident Amarjit Sharma — conned him of Rs 13 lakh after he sold 1.5 acres of his farmland.While police have arrested Kumar and Darshan, Sharma continues to be at large.Led by farm organisation BKU Ekta Ugrahan, protesters said the body of Gursewak (40) was still lying in the mortuary of Rampura Phul civil hospital.Gursewak’s wife, Kulwinder Kaur, said her husband had committed suicide because the trio had threatened him with dire consequences when she had asked him for the money. “My husband could not tolerate it and committed suicide,” she said.The Bathinda president of BKU Ekta Ugrahan, Shingara Singh Mann, said Sharma was considered close to Congress leaders, so police were not arresting him and giving him enough time to get anticipatory bail.When contacted, Bathinda SSP Naveen Singla said there was no laxity. “Two people have already been arrested and raids are being conducted to arrest him.
