BATHINDA: Punjab rural development minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa visited Bargari on Sunday to hold talks with Sarbat Khalsa appointed jathedars who have been on strike for 39 days, demanding the arrest of those guilty of sacrilege at Bargari and killing of two protesters at Behbal Kalan on October 14, 2015. The minister met Sarbat Khalsa appointed Akal Takht jathedar Dhian Singh Mand, Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar Baljit Singh Daduwal and other religious and political leaders.Bajwa asked the jathedars to end their protest as the state government is committed to trace those guilty behind sacrilege and punish them. The jathedars, however, demanded that if the government had come to know about the guilty, it should make it public.The jathedars have been on protest since June 1— three years after the bir of Guru Granth Sahib was stolen from gurdwara of Burj Jawahar Singh village near Bargari on this day.Bajwa reached Bargari grain market before noon, where Mand has been sitting on protest along with his supporters and other religious personalities. He held talks with Mand before going over to a house nearby to meet Daduwal, jathedar Amrik Singh Ajnala, United Akali Dal general secretary Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, Jaskaran Singh of SAD (Amritsar) and others. Sources said he tried to prevail upon them to end the protest.Speaking to TOI later, Daduwal said, “Bajwa asked us to end the strike as the SIT and (Justice (retd) Ranjit Singh ) commission report has reached the state government and that it (government) is committed to solve the cases of sacrilege and killing of protesters. He assured that the state government will do whatever is in its jurisdiction and as cases are with CBI, the government will recommend to the Centre to direct the agency to speed up investigations into the cases. We simply asked him to make the reports public if the SIT and commission have found any persons guilty of sacrilege. The protest will continue till the guilty are not arrested.”Bajwa, when contacted, said he had gone to Bargari as an emissary of chief minister Amarinder Singh. “I had very cordial talks with them and listened to them carefully. I will apprise Capt Amarinder Singh of whatever transpired and what the jathedars demanded,” he said.
