Amritsar, July 7 In an effort to intensify war against drug addiction, the Education Department organised a marathon on Saturday. Around 2,000 students took part in the marathon that was flagged off by School Education Minister OP Soni at Jallianwala Bagh. Soni said, “The run aims at motivating students to take up physical activities. The government is serious about handling the drug issue. People responsible for propagating drugs in the state are being held. I urge residents to take drug addicts to de-addiction centres.” The marathon commenced from Jalliawala Bagh and ended at Company Bagh. DEO Sunita Kiran, Deputy DEO Rekha Mahajan among others were present. Soni undergoes dope test A day after MLA Harpartap Singh Ajnala, his son Kanwar Partap Singh and MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla underwent dope test, OP Soni and his relative Vikas Soni (councillor) also got themselves tested at the Civil Hospital. Their reports were negative. Addressing the media, Soni said, “If people holding the position of power are consumers of drugs, they can never solve the drug problem. This is a great initiative of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.” Helpline number soon The district administration is all set to launch a helpline number where residents will be able to share information about drug abuse. The administration will also conduct seminars in schools and colleges. Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said, “People sometimes hesitate to contact the police. The administration’s helpline will be beneficial for them.”
