Retired official arrested for extortion bid

Amritsar, July 7The police have nabbed a former assistant labour commissioner for extortion bid. He allegedly extorted money from a shopkeeper while threatening him of legal action for hiring a migrant on low wages on Friday. “At around 2.30 pm on Friday, Sukhcharan came to me in an SUV and introduced himself as an assistant labour commissioner. He threatened Ashok to frame charges against him and drag him to court. He claimed he had received a complaint against Ashok that he had hired labourers on low wages.

Amritsar, July 7 The police have nabbed a former assistant labour commissioner for extortion bid. He allegedly extorted money from a shopkeeper while threatening him of legal action for hiring a migrant on low wages on Friday. The accused has been identified as Sukhcharan Singh Sidhu, a resident of Friend’s Avenue, near the old central jail on Ajnala road. Complainant Ashok Kumar said he ran a sweet shop at the main bazaar of Durgiana Mandir. He has two servants — Lallan and Chhote Lal. “At around 2.30 pm on Friday, Sukhcharan came to me in an SUV and introduced himself as an assistant labour commissioner. He claimed he had received a complaint against Ashok that he had hired labourers on low wages. He threatened Ashok to frame charges against him and drag him to court. According to Ashok, he offered Sukhcharan Rs 500 but the latter demanded more and threatened to impose a penalty of Rs 10,000. Meanwhile, Ashok got suspicious and informed the police which caught him. A case under Sections 419, 420, 170 and 171 of the IPC has been registered. The police found during preliminary probe that he had retired. — TNS
