MC forms panel to deal with sexual harassment cases

In January 2018, the Supreme Court had issued notices to the Centre and states governments to implement the recommendations of the Act. The Act provides for setting up of internal complaint committee, appointment of district officers, constitution of a local committee and nodal officers. Earlier, since no such committee was there under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, the victim had shared her story with a woman councillor, Jatinder Sonia, who further raised the issue in the General house meeting of the MC. Observing the sensitivity of the case, the MC has finally set up the panel. Dr Navjot Kaur, presiding officer of the birth and death department of the Municipal Corporation, will head the four-member committee. An office-bearer of an NGO, working for woman safety, is also on the panel. Meanwhile, the victim inspector recorded her statements at the Women’s police station. It is worth mentioning here that despite the Parliament enacted the law to check the sexual harassment of women at workplace in 2013, it has not been implemented in most of the government offices till date. In January 2018, the Supreme Court had issued notices to the Centre and states governments to implement the recommendations of the Act. The Act provides for setting up of internal complaint committee, appointment of district officers, constitution of a local committee and nodal officers. It also expands the definition of ‘workplace’ to include many public and private places, such as stadiums, sports institutes and even houses. Any public or private organisation, including educational institutions employing more than 10 persons, are covered under the Act.
