Confusion over stay on relocation of Sikh families from Shillong

AMRITSAR: While Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) claims that a Meghalaya court has stayed the process of relocation of the Sikh families living in Punjabi Lane area of Shillong and has directed the state government to file its reply on a petition filed by 218 families against this relocation, the local Sikh leadership of Shillong denies having received copy of orders.Quoting DSGMC lawyer Dr Naveen, president of Sikh body Manjit Singh GK said on Tuesday that Naveen had disclosed that the Meghalaya high court had admitted the petition and had issued a notice to the government to file its reply within four weeks and had also stayed the relocation till further orders.Notably 218 families had filed a case against the process to relocate them by the government which has constituted a high power committee for the issue.President of City Gurdwara Management Committee (CGMC) Gurjit Singh informed that he was not aware of the stay order by the court. "I am yet to receive the copy of court order and only then I will be able to comment," he said.In May, local Khasi community had allegedly attacked the Sikh population residing in Punjabi Lane area after few local bus conductors had misbehaved with some Punjabi girls.GK informed that in recent past he along with DSGMC general secretary Manjit Singh had visited Shillong when tension had erupted between Sikhs and Khasi community in the city.“We had had met local authorities as well as chief minister of the state to defuse the situation and had also assured all help to the sikh population residing there” he said.DSGMC president further informed that the high power committee constituted by Meghalaya government wouldn’t submit its report till the completion of trial of the case and the petitioners would individually file their cases before the high power committee.“The committee has no power to relocate these families but it can give its advise on the matter,” he said.
