People die even after having Z-plus security,” said Jagir Kaur, adding that a cap, hat or helmet were one and the same thing. Jagir Kaur said she also met jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Gurbachan Singh, seeking his support on the issue. She resented that the law was being imposed upon Sikh women. “The jathedar has assured us to take up the issue in the next meeting of Sikh clerics scheduled for July 23,” she said. “If at all anything is required to be protected or saved, it is the Punjabi heritage.

AMRITSAR: Outrightly rejecting Chandigarh administration’s proposal to make wearing of helmet mandatory for Sikh women except turbaned women, president of Istri Akali Dal Bibi Jagir Kaur blamed the UT administration for dividing the Sikh community.Jagir Kaur on Thursday held a meeting of the SGPC women members at the committee’s office to discuss the issue. “It is a very sensitive issue for Sikhs who have their own distinctiveness, principles and traditions, which are dedicated to the Guru and the ‘rehatnama’ directs Sikhs not to wear any kind of cap or hat,” she said while talking to TOI after the meeting. She said wearing dastar (turban) for Sikh women was not mandatory as per the ‘rehatnama’ since the word Kaur after the first name was sufficient to identify a Sikh woman.“Tomorrow they can change the definition of Sikh women by saying that a Sikh women is the one who wears a dastar and only dastar supporting women could contest SGPC elections,” she said while questioning “are they trying to create a wedge within the community. If wearing of cap or hat by a Sikh man is not acceptable then how it can be acceptable for Sikh women,” she aruged. When asked that cap or hat was worn for fashion whereas helmet provides safety in case of accident , she replied “Only Guru can provide the safety and no one else. People die even after having Z-plus security,” said Jagir Kaur, adding that a cap, hat or helmet were one and the same thing. She resented that the law was being imposed upon Sikh women. “If at all anything is required to be protected or saved, it is the Punjabi heritage. Don’t save us, save our heritage for which we can sacrifice our lives,” she said on an emotive note.“We will not accept any directions or law that would go against principles of Sikhism,” she maintained. Jagir Kaur said she also met jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Gurbachan Singh, seeking his support on the issue. “The jathedar has assured us to take up the issue in the next meeting of Sikh clerics scheduled for July 23,” she said.
