AMRITSAR: A SAD delegation would meet Chandigarh administrator and Punjab governor V P Singh Badnore on Thursday, seeking exemption from wearing helmet for Sikh women and opposing Justice Mehtab Singh Gill’s appointment as lokpal.SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema on Wednesday said the Chandigarh administration had changed the definition of Sikh women in Motor Vehicle Rules, which was not acceptable.“Earlier it was only Sikh women, but now they have made it ‘Sikh women wearing turban’ in the rules,” he said.Jagir Kaur, chief of Istri Akali Dal (SAD’s women wing), said as Sikhs were barred from wearing caps, lohtop (iron cap) and helmets, they won’t accept such directions from the UT administration. In the first week of July, Badnore had issued a notification which mandated Sikh women to wear helmet with exemption to Sikh-turbaned women.Jagir had also held a meeting with women members of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and decided to oppose the Chandigarh administration’s decision.A SAD delegation had already met Union home minister Rajnath Singh on the issue. On the issue of appointment of Justice Gill as lokpal, Cheema alleged that he was a known Congress sympathiser and the party was doubtful that he would deliver his duties without any bias.Sources said the SAD had already written to the Chief Justice of India to reject the proposal on the appointment of Justice Gill as lokpal.Cheema alleged that in the past, Justice Gill had helped chief minister Amarinder Singh in the elections and had even let him stay in his Moga residence.
