Sikh wrestler quits bout when asked to remove headgear

“I was trying to convince them but meantime Jaskanwar himself refused the bout.”Jaskanwar’s father, Salwinder Singh who himself had been an international wrestler said that players were allowed to wear head gears that didn’t harm the opponent during the bout. “May be they didn’t understand or there was some miscommunication,” he said.He said being a Sikh, he had kept long hair as enshrined by Sikh teachings but at the same time he said the issue shouldn’t be seen with prism of religion.Wrestler’s coach Jagminder said he had protested in his capacity. “My son was also wearing a cloth head covering and not of plastic, iron or wood and should have been allowed to take the bout,” he said.Jaskanwar said his coach had taken up the matter with Wrestling Federation of India so as to prevent such a situation in future.Meanwhile it is learnt that union sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had assured to look into the matter. AMRITSAR: A Sikh wrestler refused to participate in his maiden international wrestling competition in Turkey after he was asked to remove patka, a Sikh head covering, by the organisers of the world ranking tournament United World Wrestling While talking to TOI after returning from Turkey on Thursday, Tarn Taran resident Jaskanwar Singh popularly known as Jassa Patti infomred that he was part of the team that had gone to participate in the invitation wrestling tournament in Turkey which was held from July 27 to 29.“My bout was with Ukrainian wrestler on July 28 but the organisers insisted that I take the fight only after removing my headgear which I refused,” he said adding that wrestling was a game of contact and if he had removed patka then his hair would have untied and covered his eyes and face.He said the organisers also asked him to make a braid like women but he rejected the proposal.He said his coach also raised the issue with organisers but that didn’t solve the issue.
