CKD’s hospital project runs into trouble with members

AMRITSAR: The proposed Rs 250-crore joint venture of the Sikh institution Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD) Charitable Society and the Tata Trust to open cancer hospitals in Amritsar and Anandpur Sahib has courted controversy. “CKD’s major income is from school fees, which can’t be diverted for any other purpose other than spending on schools or creating a similar infrastructure ,” he said.One CKD member accused the management of extending favours to a few medical professionals closely attached with the institution in the proposed joint venture. CKD’s former secretary Bhag Singh Ankhi threatened to start an agitation and stage a dharna if the new management of the Sikh charitable body went ahead with the project.According to the proposal, CKD will provide land for both level 2 and level 3 hospitals at Amritsar and Anandpur Sahib, respectively while rest of the expenses like construction, equipment and management will be borne by the trust.
