Chamba police arrest man for vandalizing idols at ancient temple

“We have asked the ASI to restore the temple" she said.Stating that the alleged accused was mentally disturbed, Monika said during investigations it was also revealed that the alleged accused had also damaged idols installed in his house in recent past adding that being a sensitive issue that could flare up religious emotions, police had concealed the accused person’s identity. AMRITSAR: In a swift action, Chamba police arrested a person who had vandalized the idols of Hindu deities in a roadside temple at Sarotha area of Chamba city in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday morning.The ancient Hindu temple is maintained by Archeological Survey of India (ASI).Superintendent of police, Chamba, Monika Bhutungru informed that police had received a complaint on Tuesday morning that the temple had been vandalized following which an investigation was held and the accused Saurabh (name changed) was arrested.She informed that the original idol of Lord Hanuman on the rocky structure was intact but the thick layer of vermilion besmeared upon the idol by the devotees which had formed into a crust over the years was broken.
