Protest marks annual event at Punjabi University

PATIALA: An annual event organised by the Punjabi University in the memory of the late Sikh intellectual ‘Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha’ on Thursday witnessed protests as the agitators raised the issue of errors in the Mahankosh published by the university.The dissent was also raised by the students and some of the attendees at the university hall against the speakers for speaking in English about the late Sikh literary. The one published by ‘Bhasha Vibhag’ Patiala is error free.

PATIALA: An annual event organised by the Punjabi University in the memory of the late Sikh intellectual ‘Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha’ on Thursday witnessed protests as the agitators raised the issue of errors in the Mahankosh published by the university.The dissent was also raised by the students and some of the attendees at the university hall against the speakers for speaking in English about the late Sikh literary. They claimed that the Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha not only wrote 32 books in 54 years of his life but also wrote ‘Mahankosh’, the encyclopaedia of the Sikhs.The protest in the university was headed by gangster-turned social activist Lakha Sidhana, who had also contested elections in the past from Rampura Phul.In the recent past, he also led the protests in support of Punjabi language and faced cases for defacing the signboards having ‘Punjabi’ language written after other languages.“The university had done nothing to remove the errors in ‘Mahankosh’. The one published by ‘Bhasha Vibhag’ Patiala is error free. Bhai Kahan Singh fought a literary battle to prove the separate identity of the Sikh community and had also written the encyclopaedia of Sikhs in Punjabi,” he saidHowever, Manmohan Singh, an IPS officer, who spoke in English about the great Sikh literary claimed that he had only read the text from the books written by some renowned writers in the English language. “The translation of English text from the books of writers could have turned wrong in meanings and thus I avoided. Some people demanded that I should speak my content in Punjabi”.
