BATHINDA: Pakistan’s Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation chairman and advocate Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi has complained about getting threats for pursuing the matter of naming a roundabout in Lahore after the revolutionary . The petition was filed earlier this year on February 21 under Article 199 of the Pakistan constitution. Imtiaz, a lawyer at the Lahore high court , says even after change of guard in Pakistan the threats have not stopped and some fundamentalist elements are threatening him to stop pursuing the case. The petition for renaming of Shadman roundabout is listed in the court of Justice Shahid Jamil Khan of Lahore high court on September5. We demand that he should be posthumously given the highest military gallantry award ‘Nishan-e-Haider’ for his heroics.”Shadman roundabout had come up at the place, then a part of the Lahore Central Jail, where the revolutionary was hanged with Rajguru and Sukhdev on March 23, 1931. Though I have got threats from some persons for pursuing the matter, I am not scared and will keep on fighting to get recognition for him in Pakistan whom founder of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinah had praised on September 4 and 12, 1929, in the national assembly.

The petition was filed earlier this year on February 21 under Article 199 of the Pakistan constitution. Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi has made a prayer, seeking directions to the Punjab provincial government to rename the chowk as Bhagat Singh Chowk and has made Punjab chief secretary, Lahore DC and Lahore mayor as respondents.Another petition of Qureshi is pending in the Lahore high court for about two years, wherein he had prayed to the court to pronounce Shaheed Bhagat Singh as innocent in the case of killing assistant superintendent of police John P Saunders on December 17, 1928. The Bhagat Singh foundation had produced a copy of FIR registered at Anarkali Bazar police station in 1928, wherein Bhagat Singh was not named as accused.Speaking to TOI on phone from Lahore on Thursday, Imtiaz said, “The case is listed for September 5 and we have full faith in the judiciary that it will provide justice to the martyr’s followers. Though I have got threats from some persons for pursuing the matter, I am not scared and will keep on fighting to get recognition for him in Pakistan whom founder of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinah had praised on September 4 and 12, 1929, in the national assembly.
