Effigies of Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal leaders burnt

BATHINDA: Saturday witnessed burning of effigies of various political personalities in Punjab. While the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers burnt effigies of Congress leaders, Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faction burnt effigies of Akali leaders and demanded registration of case for sacrilege against former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal.Police had made elaborate security arrangements at every place to stop situation from taking ugly turn if the protesters from SAD and AAP came face-to-face. They also used harsh words for Justice Ranjit Singh (retd), a former Punjab and Haryana high court judge.Khaira-led group of AAP volunteers burnt effigies of former CM Badal his son Sukhbir at various places across Punjab and demanded registration of a case against them. However, both parties burnt effigies at different times at most of the places, avoiding any showdown.Facing criticism over Justice Ranjit Singh Commission report pointing finger at the former CM for the sacrilege incidents in Punjab, SAD workers came to streets on Saturday across the state and termed it as a conspiracy hatched by incumbent Congress with AAP and hardliner Sikh leaders.Accusing the Congress of trying to “push Punjab towards black days”, Akalis burnt effigies of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, CM Capt Amarinder Singh, state Congress president Sunil Jakhar, and Sarbat Khalsa-appointed jathedar Baljit Singh Daduwal.
