No arrests yet in Bathinda AAP zila parishad candidate's murder

BATHINDA: Police here have failed to arrest the accused for the murder of AAP candidate for zila parishad elections Harwinder Singh even after more than 36 hours of his killing.Mortal remains of Harwinder were consigned to flames on Tuesday evening after the police assured his family that they were close to identifying the accused. Harwinder (42) had filed nomination papers from Gill Kalan zone of Bathinda zila parishad as AAP candidate.Earlier, the family and residents of Harwinder's native village Jethuke had given an ultimatum to the police to arrest the accused in 36 hours or they would hold a protest by placing the body on the road. The police, however, managed to prevail upon his family for the cremation.Three persons had stayed with him at his residence on the Sunday night and he was found dead on Monday morning while the three persons had fled. Party's state acting president Balbir Singh and leader of opposition in state assembly Harpal Singh Cheema had alleged that the digital video recorder was not working at the dhaba, where Harwinder, along with the three, had taken dinner before going home. He had injury marks at the back of his head and near the right eye.Bathinda SSP Nanak Singh said that no arrest had been made so far but the police were working to identify and catch the accused.The party also alleged reluctance on the part of panchayat secretaries to issue no objection certificates (NoCs) to AAP candidates despite the fact that there was nothing due from them.
