Police claim mentally-challenged girl tore pages of Gutka Sahib found scattered in village

According to information, some local residents found torn pages of Gutka Sahib scattered in a street.Bathinda zone inpector general of police (IGP) M F Farooqui said the sacrilege case had been solved as the pages were unintentionally torn by Ramnagar resident Sukhdev Singh’s mentally-challenged maternal granddaughter. BATHINDA : The Police claimed to have solved the case of desecration of Gutka Sahib (Sikh prayer book) in Ram Nagar village of Bathinda district on Wednesday, which had led to tension in the area. A total of 22 pages were found to be torn. They also asked the villagers to maintain peace.A large number of policemen were deployed in the village fearing that the situation could take an ugly turn.

The torn pages were found outside Sukhdev’s house.Addressing the media at Bathinda, the IGP said Sukhdev’s 14-year-old maternal granddaughter had torn off the pages of Gutka Sahib and threw those in the street outside their house.When the word of sacrilege spread, Sukhdev’s daughter-in-law Babli Kaur, fearing wrath of people, burnt some of the pages left behind at the house. IGP Farooqui said police got suspicious and on searching, they found some left over pieces of the pages from Sukhdev’s house who confessed the act was not intentional and it was due to the mental illness of the juvenile girl.The IG said police were taking appropriate legal action and would look at the mental health of the girl.“We were shocked to find several torn pages of Gutka Sahib scattered in the street. A woman first saw the torn pages and informed others. We collected the pages and took those to the gurdwara . A total of 22 pages were found to be torn. We are hurt because of the incident and have reported the matter to the police,” said Gurnam Singh, a local resident.Punjab power minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs Sukhpal Singh Khaira , Jagdev Singh Kamalu and Pirmal Singh Khalsa and Sarbat Khalsa-appointed jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib Baljit Singh Daduwal visited the village and condemned the act of sacrilege. They also asked the villagers to maintain peace.A large number of policemen were deployed in the village fearing that the situation could take an ugly turn. The residents, however, remained peaceful.
