JALANDHAR/KAPURTHALA: An eight-month-old girl child drowned in the water accumulated on roads of Preet Nagar area of Jalandhar on Sunday night.The girl’s parents, who hail from Rajasthan , had put up a vend in the area during Sodhal Mela. The mother and the child went to sleep on a table at night.In the morning, the child was found dead in water a little distance away.Officials said water inundated the area due to continuous rain and the child must have fallen from the table and drowned. Chief minister Amarinder Singh asked the district administration to grant ex gratia of Rs 50,000 to the victim’s family.Meanwhile, three persons, including two children, died in separate incidents of roof collapse in Kapurthala district. Around 12 people sustained injured in different incidents. In one incident, roof of a room collapsed in Mehtabgarh locality. Two children Simran (13) and Hari (4) died while their parents were injured.In the other incident in Boota village, one Gurmej Singh was killed after the roof of his room collapsed. In four other incidents, 10 persons were injured due to roof collapse.Meanwhile, SAD demanded that the state government announce compenation for farmers for crop loss.
