As the noise from the crackers subsided, I heard human cries and realized that something was wrong. I then saw some of the neighbours running towards the Dussehra ground from where they tore the tents and picked up the carpets. Thanks to that instinct, many injured were shifted to the hospitals as early as possible. According to them, what happened at the site was a fine display of human kindness and that people rushed in to do their bit and save human lives where possible. “In between, I heard a loud horn that appeared to be that of a train.

AMRITSAR: Immediately after 74643 Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU mowed down the crowd watching the demon king go up in flames, which left several dead and hundreds of others injured, the residents from the nearby localities rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations.Without wasting time, waiting for the paramedics to arrive and shift the injured to the hospitals, many rescuers used adhoc measures to get medical attention as early as possible to the injured. They tore the tents and used the carpets from the Dussehra celebrations to wrap up the injured and the dead bodies and rushed them to nearby hospitals.Pushpinder Singh, who was among the first to have reached the spot from a nearby lane adjacent to Dhobi Ghat, where the celebrations were being held, said he was having his dinner at around 7pm when he heard the bursting of crackers. “In between, I heard a loud horn that appeared to be that of a train. As the noise from the crackers subsided, I heard human cries and realized that something was wrong. I left my food on the dining table and rushed outside to see the goriest sight of my life: parts of human bodies strewn all over the track,” he said.“It took me at least a few moments to realize what exactly has happened. I then saw some of the neighbours running towards the Dussehra ground from where they tore the tents and picked up the carpets. I also joined them and we started helping the injured,” Singh said.Varinder Singh, another resident, added: “Soon others brought in whatever vehicles they could and started transporting the injured to the hospitals even as the cops present at the spot simply looked on.”While chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh claimed that his administration had quickly got down to helping the victims and deal with the situation, the locals beg to differ. According to them, what happened at the site was a fine display of human kindness and that people rushed in to do their bit and save human lives where possible. Thanks to that instinct, many injured were shifted to the hospitals as early as possible.
