Highway car robbers' gang busted, five nabbed

While Gursharan and Swarn were arrested from Bughipur Chowk in Moga, the remaining three were nabbed at Rauli Chowk of the city. Police have launched a search operation to track him down.Police said the gang used to ram into vehicles and, when the owner or the driver came out, they snatched the car by pointing a pistol at the person. In October, they used the Brezza to rob a Hyundai Creta near Hotel Skyring in Mehna village.Striking again the next day, the robbers snatched a Toyota Fortuner near Makhu crossing. They used the method in all four cases of snatching, said police.Acting on a tip-off, police brought one Harmandar Singh of Mastewala village in Moga from Kapurthala jail on a production warrant.

BATHINDA: Moga police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang which allegedly robbed highway travellers of their cars and SUVs at gunpoint.Moga senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gulneet Singh Khurana said police had arrested five men, recovered four cars robbed by them, and three country-made pistols. The arrested men have been identified as Ranjot Singh, Gursharan Singh and Arshdeep Singh, all three from Mandar village in Moga; and Swarn Singh of Mastewala village in Moga, and Mukesh Kumar of Nasirpur Jania village in Moga.Two other gang members, Gurpreet Singh of Daulewala village and Bhupinder Singh, are still at large. Police have launched a search operation to track him down.Police said the gang used to ram into vehicles and, when the owner or the driver came out, they snatched the car by pointing a pistol at the person. They used the method in all four cases of snatching, said police.Acting on a tip-off, police brought one Harmandar Singh of Mastewala village in Moga from Kapurthala jail on a production warrant. He was lodged there in a case of drug peddling. During investigation, Harmandar confessed to having worked with the gang in the robbery of a Mahindra XUV near the railway crossing of Dagru village in Moga on June 24 night.The next day, the gang used the snatched vehicle to rob a Maruti Suzuki Brezza near Ajitwal bridge of the district. In October, they used the Brezza to rob a Hyundai Creta near Hotel Skyring in Mehna village.Striking again the next day, the robbers snatched a Toyota Fortuner near Makhu crossing. Earlier, the gang members also robbed Rs 2.5 lakh from a biker, Gurwinder Singh, in Jagraon on October 11. The police arrested the accused on the basis of the information provided by Harmandar. While Gursharan and Swarn were arrested from Bughipur Chowk in Moga, the remaining three were nabbed at Rauli Chowk of the city.
