Paddy buying: Farmers block traffic in Bathinda

Because of the 17% moisture content limit on the crop, farmers have faced lots of hardships in grain markets. BATHINDA: Protesting outside Bathinda district administrative complex for the past six days to demand relaxation in moisture content for procuring paddy , the activists of farmer organisation BKU Sidhupur on Friday blocked traffic on the Bathinda-Mansa road here. "We disrupted traffic as the state government has given no heed to our demand. We will continue protesting till the government does not extend relaxation," he said. 'Even as the farmer organisation organized the protest, procurement season is in the last leg in the state as over 80%paddy has already been procured.Farmers have been demanding an increase in the limit on moisture content of paddy from present 17% to to 24%, as untimely rain before harvest led to the increase in moisture in the harvested crop.BKU Sidhupur Bathinda district president Baldev Singh Sandoha said they had started a hunger strike outside Bathinda DC office six days ago.
