Teachers block traffic in Bathinda, demand full pay

Bathinda: A large number of teachers under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan from 10 districts of the state assembled in Bathinda and disrupted vehicular traffic on the Bathinda-Mansa road on Sunday.The teachers are being supported by farmers and labourers organization.They have demanded full pay upon regularization of their services. They raised slogans against the state government, finance minister Manpeet Badal, education minister O P Soni and secretary education Krishan Kumar.Sanjha Adhyapak Morcha activists Didar Singh Mudki and Jagsir Singh Sahota said injustice was being done to teachers. They said the teachers had been working for 10 years and were being paid over Rs 40,000 per month, but they were now being asked to work for Rs 15,000 per month.They said when the teachers objected to it, they were transferred to far off places against the norms of no mid-term transfers and were also being victimized through other ways. In October, the state government had announced to regularize services of around 8,886 SSA, RMSA teachers on consolidated salary of Rs 15,000 per month for a probation period of three years, but most of the teachers who have been working for about 10 years were being paid up to Rs 40,000 per month.The teachers initially converged outside the Bathinda district administrative complex and then gathered outside the office of the Punjab finance minister Manpreet Badal, but after holding a rally at the administrative complex for nearly two hours, they headed towards the ITI flyover leading to Mansa, Talwandi Sabo, Dabwali and Badal-Lambi and disrupted traffic.Thousands of teachers with large number of women and activists of farmer organisations, including BKU Ekta Ugrahan, BKU Dakonda and Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union, sat on the flyover.
