Sikh bodies: Telescope was never a demand

Installation of a high-powered telescope on border to view Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib is one of the steps planned.Stating that the announcement of telescope was nothing but a mockery to the Sikhs’ religious sentiments, Punjab cabinet minister and MLA from Dera Baba Nanak, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa , said therewas no need of a telescope but of a dedicated corridor for which Sikhs had been struggling for long.Randhawa had even got a gate constructed on the road leading to international border from Dera Baba Nanak.Head of Sangat Langah Kartarpur, one of the Sikh outfits demanding the corridor, B S Goraya said, “A set of binocular is already provided by Border Security Force, and telescope wouldn’t make any difference.” AMRITSAR: Spearheading the movement for the construction of a dedicated corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan , Sikh organizations are “disappointed with the Union government’s announcement of installing high-powered telescope at the international border for a clear view of the shrine”.SGPC chief secretary Roop Singh said they were expecting the Centre to announce beginning of construction of the corridor ahead of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev not to put up a telescope.“The telescope will only make Gurdwara Sahib appear closer but the Sikh concept of ‘darshan-ishnan’ (obeisance and holy dip) will not be fulfilled,” he said.The Union ministry of culture had on Tuesday announced a series of activities to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev beginning from Friday.
