Punjab: 10-year-old domestic help 'brutalised' in Patiala's posh locality

PATIALA: A 10-year-old girl's knuckles were brunt with electric iron, her ears pressed between hot plates of hair straightener. He claimed the girl was of legal age to work as domestic help and that her father worked at their properties in Uttarakhand. He said the girl's father would be coming to Patiala on Thursday.However, the district child protection officer Harpreet Kaur Sandhu said the girl's age needed to be medically confirmed. He said yesterday they had gone to attend some family function and when they returned they could not find the girl. She told him that she was 10-year-old.

PATIALA: A 10-year-old girl's knuckles were brunt with electric iron, her ears pressed between hot plates of hair straightener. The girl was even thrashed and spat on her face by her employers in a hosue in a posh Patiala locality.Her ordeal continued till Wednesday when she fled the house of her 'captors'.The girl has been handed over to the district child welfare committee on Thrusday.The girl was rescued by an elderly couple who lived in her neighbourhood in the officers's enclave.The girl was spotted wandering around the area with a handbag late Wednesday by retired army colonel Neel Sachar and his wife.The couple took the girl to their home and called up Punjabi University professor Sumaer Sira, who immediately went to their house and informed the district child welfare committee (CWC) about the matter.Professor Sira said when he saw the girl, he was shocked to see that her knuckles had been burnt with electric iron and she had a swollen cheek underneath her left eye. She told him that she was 10-year-old."In the morning I saw that even her ears had been burnt and she told me that these had been pressed between hot hair straightener," he said.Along with his wife, he administered some first aid to the girl and later took up the matter with deputy commissioner Kumar Amit, who immediately ordered a probe and asked chairman of the district child welfare committee to have the matter looked into.Deputy commissioner Kumar Amit said that he had received a call from the university professor and immediately asked the CWC to ensure that the girl was provided with all medical help and action against those responsible be initiated as per the law.Baldev Singh Sandhu, chairman of the district child welfare committee, said they have already got medical examination of the girl conducted at the local hospital and they have also recorded her statement.District child protection officer Harpreet Kaur Sandhu said the bruises on child's hands, ears and face we're quite visible.CWC chairman Sandhu said the girl said that she hailed from a small village in Uttarakhand. Her grandmother had sent her, along with her two sisters, to work at the house of one Kanav Bansal, who owns a local cloth store, about two and a half years back.While, she was kept at Patiala, her sisters were sent to Delhi to work as domestic help at the house of some relatives of Kanav Bansal. Since then she has not met with any of her sisters, the girl has claimed.However, Kanav Bansal, when contacted, denied all the allegations and claimed that the girl would often indulge in self harm with electric iron. He said yesterday they had gone to attend some family function and when they returned they could not find the girl. He claimed the girl was of legal age to work as domestic help and that her father worked at their properties in Uttarakhand. He said the girl's father would be coming to Patiala on Thursday.However, the district child protection officer Harpreet Kaur Sandhu said the girl's age needed to be medically confirmed.
