BATHINDA: The 91-year-old former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal celebrated the 98th foundation day of Shiromani Akali Dal at Lambi gurdwara on Friday. He used the occasion to accuse Congress of trying to destabilise the party. On December 14, 1920, Akali Dal was formed, completing 98 years of its formation on Friday. The Akali leaders held prayers in gurdwaras at various places across the state. Badal preferred to remain at Lambi and Giddarbaha area instead of attending the on-going brief winter session of the state assembly. Party president Sukhbir Singh Badal, however, attended the assembly session.Badal, while addressing Akali workers at the gurdwara, said that various splinter groups were formed during his political career spanning nearly seven decades, but people recognised only the main Akali Dal in all these years. Congress had tried to destabilise the Akali Dal many times, either by supporting various players in the elections to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) or by supporting various splinter groups, but never succeeded in its nefarious designs, he said, adding that now again Congress government is trying to split the Akali Dal by promoting some leaders from behind the scene. “But it will not succeed in its designs,” he said. He also said Akali Dal has faced a score of litmus tests and came out victorious every time.Badal said that SAD is second oldest party after Congress and the party had fought against atrocities, including when state of emergency was enforced in 1975.Badal speaking on Kartarpur Sahib corridor said that neither Punjab Congress government nor Navjot Singh Sidhu have done anything for it. “It was the Union government and Pakistan which has taken the necessary steps to fulfil long pending demand of Sikhs. We appreciate the gesture of both the governments,” he added.
