3 days after outburst, Kulbir Singh Zira’s assistant arrested in Moga

BATHINDA: Two days after Congress MLA Kulbir Singh Zira boycotted the oath-taking ceremony of sarpanches in Ferozepur and accused the police of having a nexus with the liquor mafia, his personal assistant, Neeraj Sharma alias Ginni, was arrested in Moga city on Monday night.Ginni was declared a proclaimed offender in a murder case in 2015. The murder of Moga-based photographer Rajesh Kaura dates to 2013. However, Ginni was booked in the case only in 2015. Though he had been evading arrest, Ginni used to roam freely with the MLA, according to a source in the police.The case was registered at Moga South City police station. He had accused the police of colluding with the liquor mafia.On Monday, in reply to the claims, a liquor contractor alleged that Zira had been demanding Rs 50 lakh from him. Ginni, it has alleged, went into hiding when the SAD-BJP government was in power. However, he stopped hiding when the Congress formed the state government and Zira was elected as the MLA from Zira seat in Ferozepur district.Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal had on Monday accused Zira of patronising drug lords and demanded an explanation from the Congress government. Meanwhile, the Congress has issued a show-cause notice to the MLA for boycotting the function. Zira has already met Punjab DGP Suresh Arora and demanded scrapping of police cases which, he said, had been registered falsely against Congress workers.Zira could not be contacted for comment.
