Bank takes house, indebted farmer ends his life in Barnala

The house of farmer Jagwinder Singh (36) at his village was locked by a bank authority nearly 10 days ago. BATHINDA: An indebted farmer committed suicide at Patti Sekhwan village in Barnala district on Sunday by taking poison. Later, Barnala SSP Harjit Singh said that names of two persons were added in the case already registered after the video came to light. Sometime ago he had strained ties with his wife, who had gone away and had started living with someone else. A case abetment of suicide has been registered against his wife Shinder Kaur and another person Mohammad Hussain on the complaint of Jagwinder’ mother Harbans Kaur.

BATHINDA: An indebted farmer committed suicide at Patti Sekhwan village in Barnala district on Sunday by taking poison. The house of farmer Jagwinder Singh (36) at his village was locked by a bank authority nearly 10 days ago. Later, a video clip of the farmer came to the fore in the evening, wherein he named Kulwant Jagal and Kulwant Khuddi for forcing him to commit suicide.The farmer had 10 acres nearly seven years ago but had to sold 8 acres. The villagers said that the farmer had spent lavishly on constructing a palatial home after taking a loan of Rs 30 lakh a few years ago from the Barnala branch of Central Bank of India. Sometime ago he had strained ties with his wife, who had gone away and had started living with someone else. Of the remaining two acres, nearly half of the land was in the name of his wife.When the farmer took the extreme step, his family members rushed him to Barnala civil hospital, from where he was referred to Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala , where he breathed his last in the afternoon.A police official said that the bank was ready to waive the interest amount and wanted him to pay Rs 30 lakh as principal amount under one-time settlement but after Jagwinder had failed to repay a case was filed in the court, which had allowed possession of the house. In accordance with the court order, the district revenue authorities went to his house and locked it.Barnala Sadar police station SHO Gurbir Singh said that after some days of his house being locked, Jagwinder broke open the lock. A case was registered against him. On Sunday, he had an altercation with his wife on phone and consumed some poisonous substance. A case abetment of suicide has been registered against his wife Shinder Kaur and another person Mohammad Hussain on the complaint of Jagwinder’ mother Harbans Kaur. Later, Barnala SSP Harjit Singh said that names of two persons were added in the case already registered after the video came to light.
