FEROZEPUR: A 45-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide in Mehma village in Ferozpeur district due to crop failure and debt burden on Monday. Karamjeet Singh, 45, who owned five acres of land at Mehma, had suffered losses and was under heavy debt. Further probe was under way, the police said. According to his family, he consumed some poisonous substance in the morning.Surinder Singh, cousin of the deceased, claimed that Karamjeet sold 1.5 acre of his land recently to pay off some of his debts, but the debt burden was still over Rs 12 lakh. "He was under mental stress for some time as the officials of the State Bank of India, to whom he owe the money, were pressing him to repay the balance loan amount," he claimed.Meanwhile, a case of accidental death has been registered in the matter.
