GURDASPUR: The Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) began the construction of the passenger terminal building (PTB) at the proposed integrated check post (ICP) on the Indian side of Kartarpur corridor at Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district on Monday. The work kicked off with levelling of land even as the district administration is yet to acquire the land from farmers.“Today we began the work at the ICP by levelling the land at Jaurian village and now the work will pick up pace soon,” said manager, LPAI, Sukhdev Singh while talking to TOI on Monday. He said that the wheat crop was harvested from the fields and farmers were given adequate compensation for the same. He further said that the ICP would be constructed on 50 acres with a state-of-the-art PTB. He said that tenders for the construction of the ICP had been floated and would be awarded in a couple of days.India began work by bringing in heavy machinery at the international border on the eve of the proposed meeting of technical experts of both India and Pakistan scheduled to be held on March 19 at the proposed zero points to finalise the alignments. But the farmers whose land is to be acquired for the ICP were caught unawares when the LPAI as well as district administration officials arrived to begin the work.“This is nothing but government high-handedness as the government is yet to acquire the land. How can they begin the construction work?” rued Money Mahajan president of Kisan Bachao Committee. He alleged that the administration had found a ‘soft link’ among them and allured one of the farmers having a very small portion of land with some benefits, following which he agreed to allow the LPAI to begin work from his land.Narinder Singh, a farmer whose land has been identified land for acquisition, rued that the government had backtracked from its assurance to farmers. “We will not settle for anything less than Rs 80 lakh per acre but the rumours are that government is considering to offer anything between Rs 25 to Rs 30 lakh per acre.”The committee is also mulling going to court and beginning serial protests if construction work was not stopped before giving ‘desirable’ price of their land. “We will be left with no option but to move court and begin agitation if justice is not done,” said Mahajan. On the other hand, Gurdaspur DC Vipul Ujjwal said that the land acquisition process was in progress and very soon land prices would be announced.
