3 arrested with Rs 1 crore in old currency, prohibited weapon

PATIALA: Acting on a tip off, Patiala police on Tuesday evening arrested three persons with Rs 1 crore in old currency and Rs 1.5 Lakh in new currency along with a prohibited weapon.Three persons, who have been identified as Kanwarjit Singh, Maskeen and Baldev Singh had entered Punjab via Ambala and were intercepted at a check post put up near Rajpura. During the search of their vehicle, the cops recovered the said money along with a 455 bore pistol which is a prohibited weapon and is not licensed to common people.Senior Superintendent of Police Mandeep Singh Sidhu said Rajpura police intercepted a Verna car at around 7pm and while searching the same the said recoveries were made. It was during this operation that the said recoveries were made, he said.Meanwhile, a case under the relevant sections of the law has been registered at the Rajpura police station and the matter is being further investigated.The SSP said police investigators were also verifying if the three accused had any past criminal record. He said the police also recovered nine used cartridges along with 13 live cartridges from the accused persons.He said that it was a serious matter and the investigators had now got down to dig out as to where from the money had been sourced and where it was being taken and for what purpose.The SSP said following the instructions issued by the Election Commission of India , the district police had been asked to put up surprise check posts across all strategic points.
