Bhagat Singh links Pakistanis, Indians

Not fearing threats of religious groups, people in large numbers descended at Shadman Chowk to pay tributes to the trio. Foundation chief patron and Pakistan supreme court lawyer Abdul Rashid Qureshi and his son Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi termed Bhagat Singh not only martyr of India but of the sub continent. “We too have every right over the memory of Bhagat Singh as the freedom fighter was not only born in Pakistan, but had spent most of the time of his short but meaningful life at Lahore.

BATHINDA: At a time when tension between neighbouring countries of India and Pakistan has escalated to the extent that the Indian government boycotted the Pakistan national day and stopped Indians from attending programme at Pakistan high commission, the 88th martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev turned out as common event for Bhagat Singh aficionados in both countries.Besides paying homage to Bhagat Singh, his followers in Pakistan have sough from the Pakistan government to declare him as national martyr, issue postage stamp in his name, put a statue at Shadman Chowk naming it after Bhagat Singh and demand an apology from the British queen for hanging of Bhagat Singh and his comrades.The relations between India and Pakistan worsened after JeM terrorists blew up a bus killing 40 CRPF personnel on February 14 and the Indian Air Force destroying terrorist camps at Pakistan’s Balakot in retaliation.Transcending boundaries the voices of ‘Long live memory of Bhagat Singh’ were raised in the heart of Lahore on Saturday on the 88th martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, who were hanged in Lahore Central Jail (where few years ago a roundabout named Shadman Chowk had come up) on March 23, 1931. Not fearing threats of religious groups, people in large numbers descended at Shadman Chowk to pay tributes to the trio. We see him as an icon of struggle,” Imtiaz said while talking to ToI over phone from Lahore.Imtiaz had in April 2013 filed a petition in the Lahore high court for re-opening of the case so that Bhagat Singh could be declared innocent on the basis of an FIR retrieved that year where Bhagat Singh’s name did not figure in the case registered after killing of British police officer JP Saunders in December 1928.Imtiaz said, “We want Bhagat Singh to be treated as a freedom fighter in Pakistan and Shadman Chowk should be named after him.
