Students, patients forced to buy water Manmeet Singh Gill Amritsar, June 13 With no water supply at the hospital as well as the hostel of the Government Medical College (GMC) here, the patients and students are a harried lot. Sources at the college say two of the four tubewells supplying water to the college premises are defunct, resulting in water scarcity. A student at the college hostel said, “The problem had surfaced three days ago. Even as everyone used water scarcely, the tanks ran dry on yesterday evening. Today everyone went to classes and hospital duties without bathing or brushing teeth.” Another girl student said, “There is no water even for drinking. We have to purchase water bottles.” She said it was difficult to manage without water. Even residents of the residential complex are facing the problem. The college has a strength of 1,300 students who reside in four hostels. Even at the hospital, the water tanks went dry at around 12 pm. With no water in washrooms, the patients and their attendants are also troubled. Patients said that without water the toilets were unusable and the hospital authorities must get the tubewells repaired immediately. GMC Principal Dr Sujata Sharma was not available for comments. Guru Nanak Dev Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr Shiv Charan said, “The problem arose as two of the tubewells developed some snag and became defunct. Even at present, technicians are working and motors will be ready as soon as possible.” He said they had been working continuously to restore the supply.
