Amritsar, June 15 Doctors at a private hospital have performed a rare surgery to treat Cerebral Fat Embolism to save the life of a 22-year-old man. Doctors said the patient, Shamsher Singh, got his leg fractured after a bike accident. “A very dangerous complication of long bone fracture is Fat Embolism, leading to Pulmonary Embolism in which life can be saved in 60 to 70 per cent cases, but if it progresses to Fat Embolism Syndrome, the percentage of survival decreases manifold,” said Dr Jatinder Malhotra of The Corporate Hospital. “A more dreadful complication, called Cerebral Fat Embolism in which prognosis is very bad, occurred in Shamsher Singh’s case. The patient remained on ventilator for more than 15 days and recovered fully after a month,” he said. Malthotra said that the patient could be saved with the joint efforts of neurologist, neuro surgeon, orthopaedics, cardiologist and intensivist. He said they have seen many cases of Cerebral Fat Embolism in last two decades but many could not be saved.
