Consumer forum asks insurance firm to cough up Rs 50K

Tribune News ServiceAmritsar, June 16The district consumer disputes redressal forum has directed an insurance company to pay Rs 50,000, the balance amount from her insurance claim, along with compensation of Rs 5,000 and litigation expenses of Rs 3,000. Complainant Riya Khanna, a resident of Namak Mandi, informed the consumer forum that she had bought an insurance policy from United India Insurance Company by paying a premium of Rs 10,379 with a sum assured of Rs 2.5 lakh. Riya said she was diagnosed with cholelithiasis and remained admitted in a hospital and incurred an expenditure of Rs 3,65,477. She stated that the insurance company reimbursed Rs 2 lakh to the hospital despite the fact that policy covered sum assurance of Rs 2.5 lakh. The complainant stated that she requested the opposite party to release the balance claim amount but to no avail.

The opposite party in its reply stated that the claim has been genuinely settled and paid in the light of terms and conditions of the policy and there was no deficiency in their service at any point. The forum observed that the complainant has been harassed for no fault on her part, because opposite party made the complainant to file the instant complaint by engaging a counsel for filing the complaint, besides incurring expenses for counsel fee as well as expenses on lodging the complaint.
