Rain, storm uproot trees, cripple traffic

A pole at the backside of the Celebration Mall, Batala road, fell on a bike and almost crushed it. Even after the stoppage of rain, traffic jams continued across the city. After a portion of the Mall road caved in, the BRTS has been diverted through a single lane. Residents have been facing heavy traffic jams on the Mall road.

Trigger waterlogging in most areas, traffic snarls witnessed Charanjit Singh Teja Amritsar, June 20 A brief spell of rain coupled with high velocity wind this morning uprooted trees, inflicting damages on a number of vehicles. The Heritage Street and other roads and streets were left inundated, exposing the government’s poor preparation for monsoon. Some places witnessed hailstorm. A car, parked opposite to the BSNL office near the circuit house, was damaged when a mango tree fell on it. The car was moving when the tree inside the BSNL office fell on it. The diver had a narrow escape. Windowpanes of the car were damaged. Another tree near the deputy commissioner’s residence got uprooted and blocked the road. A pole at the backside of the Celebration Mall, Batala road, fell on a bike and almost crushed it. The rain that lasted for around one hour exposed the poor drainage system in the city. It led to overflowing of drains and sewerage at the bus stand, BRTS track, GT Road, MM Malvia Road, Majitha Road, Batala Road, Putalighar, GT Road, SSSS Chowk and several areas of the walled city. All major sewer lines remain choked which led to accumulation of rainwater on roads and streets till late evening. Even after the stoppage of rain, traffic jams continued across the city. Rainwater also accumulated in parking lots. The commuters faced inconvenience as several roads were blocked or witnessed heavy traffic jam. Several vehicles took an abrupt halt on roads due to waterlogging and drivers had to push their vehicles aside to clear way for other commuters. After a portion of the Mall road caved in, the BRTS has been diverted through a single lane. Residents have been facing heavy traffic jams on the Mall road. Besides, the rainfall also brought forth the true picture that hid behind the glitter of the Rs 250-crore Golden Temple Heritage Street project. Devotees could be seen wading through stagnant water, holding shoes in their hands. Rainwater entered in several houses in low-lying areas. “It hasn’t happened for the first time. It is unfortunate that the government is not taking a lesson from its past mistakes. Waterlogging is visible across the city. A separate storm sewerage is required in the city,” said Hardeep Singh, a resident of Partap Nagar.
