Amritsar, June 21 Just as the International Day of Yoga drew enough eyeballs on June 21, the day also marked World Music Day. The Indian Academy of Fine Arts (IAFA) organised a special programme for the love of music. The event was chaired by Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, senior artist Shiv Dev Singh and Dr PS Grover. Eminent names from the music industry from the city, including Harinder Sohal and actor Arvinder Bhatti, performed popular Bollywood and Punjabi numbers for the audience. Noted orthopedic surgeon, Dr Navpreet Singh Hanspal, impressed the audience with his music skills. His performance with a saxophone was the highlight of the evening. The only saxophone player in city, Dr Hanspal, who is in his 60s, said that his passion for music and the instrument is meditative. The primary focus of the evening was also to bring the music back to people’s lives. “The concept behind celebrating Fête de la Musique, also known as Music Day, is that everyone can be a musician. In France, people on this day are allowed and urged to play music outside in their neighborhoods or in public places, such as parks. Even today, free concerts are organised world over where musicians play for fun and not for money. We Punjabis too were brought up with music as a part of our everyday life. Our rich folk history is a proof of that. But gradually, we have pushed music away from us, instead depending on other sources of entertainment. It is important to understand that music is a way of life and it should be celebrated everyday and not assigned to particular calendar days,” said Dr PS Grover, convener for the evening. He also said that once people turn into audience/listeners, spaces will open up for free music concerts in city as well.
